Setting up a home school group

Information about setting up a Home Ed group

Getting children together is a great way for them to learn. Below is a guide to organising learning activities as a group and ideas on how you can make the sessions really valuable and worthwhile.

  • Find a few like-minded families who are also keen to meet
  • Find a venue that has indoor and outdoor access and also quiet space for any children with additional needs
  • Work out how many families you need to make it viable (venue/resources) e.g. we started with a voluntary contribution of £3 per family, with 7 families
  • Agree time and day(s) to meet and if you intend to meet throughout the year or just term time
  • Ask the children what they want – this is what the children in our group said, “we want the group to stay the same, we don’t want people to drop in as we want to build relationships with our friends”. ‘We want to start on time if we can as some of us feel anxious waiting’
  • Decide on how you want to promote the group – we decided not to advertise on Facebook initially as we didn’t want a large group to start off with and we wanted commitment from families. About 6 months in when we were settled we advertised and we are now at 16 families.
  • The group is not run by anyone but we share the tasks – one family do the admin, one emails out information, collects money and pays venues, other families help search for events and activities when we don’t have a venue or we want to do something extra. All of the events can be local to allow the children to build a sense of where they live and the wider community – we use our local Sports Centre and have visited the fire brigade, an old peoples home, supported our local homeless charity, visited a community farm, gardens, parks, the beach and taken part in bird watching
  • Keep the children at the center of everything you do and the decisions the group make
  • We didn’t opt to have insurance as we agreed we are all responsible for our own children and would remain on site but it is possible to take out insurance and some groups do
